ELD Side Event at 8th Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference
8-10 June, Batumi, Georgia
The ELD Initiative held a joint side event with the Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (REC) and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The side-event focused specifically on Land Degradation Neutrality and its vital contribution to sustainable growth, as well as its effect on the economies of countries within Central Asia. High level keynotes highlighted the relevance of land degradation and sustainable land management for Tajikistan and Georgia. Hannes Etter from the ELD Secretariat further discussed the potential for and mobilisation of investment in sustainable land management, and its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals. A panel discussion featured S. Ersin Esen from the United Nations Environment Programme Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (UNEP DEPI), Dana Yermolyonik representing GIZ Central Asia, Sara Minelli and Jamal Annagylyjova from the (UNCCD) and Stacey Noel from the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative.
This Ministerial Conference targeted two main themes in particular: Greening the Economy in the pan-European Region, and Improving Air Quality for a Better Environment and Human Health.
