Bernd HansjürgensiIs the Head of the Thematic Area "Environment and Society" and the Department of Economics at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, Germany. He is a Professor in Environmental Economics, at Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. His recent projects include co-leading the Leopoldina – German Academy of Science's Working Group "Biodiversity – Water – Climate" from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, he has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of FEdA, Germany’s federal research ministers Board on Biodiversity Conservation, since 2021. He has been involved with WWF Germany, serving as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board since 2020 and as its chairman since 2024, as well as being part of the WWF Germany Council since 2023. He has also been a member of the German Federal Environment’s Soil Commission (KBU) since 2015 and has served as its chairman since 2019. In his research, Prof. Hansjürgens focuses on the economic valuation of nature, natural climate mitigation, peatland restoration, rewilding as a new approach to conservation, and environmental policy instruments.
